The Decision That Will Make Or Break You3 min read

When you’re on The Path you’re going to be tested in unforeseeable ways. Obstacles that would have been impossible to prepare for will show up no matter what the amount of planning or analysis you could have done. Your response, not the event itself, will determine your future. And you have two options of how you can lead through these challenges: you can choose to lead by ego, or you can choose to lead by humility.

If you choose ego, you will enjoy the indulgences from others, you will thrive on the glory, and you will feel unstoppable at times. You will fall in love with the feeling of being invincible and adore those who look up to you. You will enjoy the comfort of making even the most minor accomplishments feel like major milestones.

But if you choose ego, all those years of masking uncomfortable truths will eventually hit you hard. You will be driven, but at the expense of comparing yourself to others. You will experience such great highs, only to face such miserable lows. Years of indulgence will leave you blind to your weaknesses, making it easy for the enemy to flank you. Life will hit you hard, and you will feel like you were blindsided, as though the world dealt you a bad hand of cards. Surely you could not be defeated unless it was out of your control. You will cling to such a false truth, forever playing the victim.

If you choose ego, there will always be an insatiable need for more. Never satisfied, you will drink and only be more thirsty. An impossible task, closer to a curse than a pleasure – like the Greek myth of Tantalus who spent the afterlife with a branch of fruit hanging above his head, only for the tree to move beyond his grasp anytime he reached for the fruit, leaving him hungry and thirsty for eternity.

If you choose ego, a fullness will never be reached, only a bottomless feeling of emptiness. You may be surrounded by those who indulge you, but your closest suitor will be the inescapable feeling of lack. The temptation for immediate pleasure will betray you with nothingness. If you choose ego, there will always be a lingering voice urging you for more, only to starve your sense of worth, eventually driving you mad.

If you choose humility you will be out of the spotlight and miss out on receiving credit you deserve. Some may mistake your choice to be humble as weak. Others may underestimate your abilities. Choosing humility will remove the high of constant praise from others.

But If you choose humility you will be driven by excellence, not indulgence. You’ll be on a purpose driven mission, not a self-driven illusion. If you choose humility you will develop invaluable qualities – delay gratification, continuous preparation, taking personal accountability – actions the ego driven person is repelled by.

If you choose to be humble you will face the cold, unforgiving spirit called The Truth. But if you are humble you will know not to fight this force, for it is undefeated, and always will be. The Truth has no feelings, only the feelings we give it. If you choose humility you will view this spirit as an ally, not the enemy. In times of need, you will be able to fallback and trust this source instead of being on the run from it.

If you choose humility then you choose to endure and embrace the unrelenting nature of The Truth, but it will reward you with clear vision of where you are going. Being humble makes you aware of your weaknesses, but grants you the knowledge of how to counter them when tested. When adversity hits, you will turn any setback to your advantage.

If you choose humility, instead of looking for ongoing praise, you will be on the lookout for others, allowing for deeper more meaningful relationships. If you choose humility, you won’t need any outside validation – there will be a peace of mind of knowing that the only acceptance that matters is your own. And lastly, if you choose humility, you will be free from the everyday chaos, happy with yourself, and have an added richness and fullness to life.

The choice is yours.
